Lighthouse Reef Atoll, in Belize, is the largest barrier reef in Mesoamerica; second in size only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. In collaboration with Lighthouse Reef Conservation Institute, we are exploring sustainability solutions that will establish economic independence for a Marine Managed Area (MMA) facility. Our hybrid non-profit/for-profit model emerged where we can converge a research/management station with an adventure tourism destination. We call this an OTGRC: Off The Grid Research Community.

Adventure tourism drives the revenue for the entire OTGRC. The new ‘adventure’ tourist is immersed in a variety of experiences, including adventure sports and recreation, geotourism (land and sea exploration), agri-tourism (farm to table experience), voluntourism/research tourism (assisting MPA staff with data collection, such as species inventory), health tourism (nutrition and wellness retreat), and cultural tourism (immersion in local heritage).
